Русское конечно имеет несколько эквивалентов в английском языке: certainly, surely, of course, различающихся по значению и по месту в предложении. Certainly означает 'несомненно, естественно, непременно, безусловно, само собой разумеется' и обычно ставится перед смысловым глаголом или после глагола to be: I am certainly not going out in this rain (ни в коем случае); the film is certainly worth seeing (я знаю наверняка); he will certainly not forget to bring it (это совершенно определенно, не подлежит сомнению). Surely может употребляться вместо certainly, но редко встречается в этом значении. Surely имеет значение 'я твердо верю' или 'я очень надеюсь на то, что это правда, хотя это и не является несомненным'. Surely обычно ставится в начале предложения, реже в конце или сразу после подлежащего: surely you are not going out in this rain 'вы, конечно, не собираетесь выходить из дому в такой дождь' (я был бы очень удивлен, если бы это было иначе); the film is worth seeing, surely 'фильм, конечно, стоит посмотреть' (я думаю, это хороший фильм); he surely won't forget to bring it 'конечно, он не забудет это принести' (надеюсь, это будет так). Of course близко по значению к certainly и обычно ставится в начале или в конце предложения: of course I shall be there и I shall be there, of course.Трудности английского языка (лексический справочник).
